Civil War A Very Long And Educated War - Free Essay Example

The Civil War took place between April 12, 1861 May 9, 1865. The Confederate fired at Fort Sumter in South Carolina in Charlestons Harbor that was the beginning of four long years. Both the North and South now had to prepare for the war ahead. Once America gained its independence from Britain the North and South already started arguing over things. The North and the South never got along and could not decide on one thing. They did not get along due to them both having different beliefs. Nobody was to blame for the start of the war, but themselves. People saw this war coming from the very beginning. Due to them not being able to handle things this caused the Nation to split into two. One of the main reasons for tThe Civil War was a very long and educatedhe Civil war was slavery. The South was still using slavery as for the North was not. They turned to industrys and machines that took the spot of African Americans. This caused tension between the United States. Another reason for the Civil War was because of the tariffs. Congress put tariffs on imported goods which the South really relied on. The South ended up getting their goods from the North. The North relied on the money to keep small business running. The South found this unconstitutional since Congress cant just tariff things like they did. The South wanted equal rights so they fought for what they wanted. The war lasted four years. As many as 620,000 people died during the war from fighting, to starvation, disease, or by accident. The North has around 22 million people while the South had around nine million people but four million of those were slaves. During the war, the North had way more supplies and advantages over the South. The North had more money, supplies, railroads, food, and factories. The only difference was that when it came to defense skills the South had that going for them. The South also had more military commanders then the North. After the first fire of Fort Sumter it took about three months for them to fight again. The next war was First Battle of Bull Run in Virginia between Richmond and Washington DC. Most people believing that the war would end quickly many government officials and spectators came to watch. The union lost and had to retreat. Northerners were shocked of the outcome and knew they had to prepare for a more serious road ahead. The South thought bec ause of the loss that the Civil War would end a lot sooner and that the North didnt have the will to fight. After that War the next one was Battle of Shiloh, this war took place on April 1862. Ulysses S. Grant took the first step on the Confederate forces in Shiloh, Tennessee. This war was a blood bath taking many tens of thousands mens life. Grant won the war and told the Confederates that Lincoln was taking this serious about maintaining the Union. After the message Southerners prepared for a longer war. Lee didnt want to wait around for the enemy to attack, so he took matters into his own hands and went to the Unions turf. He was hoping that with the victory of Maryland that the state legislatures would secede. This battle was Battle of Antietam and took place on September 1862. Lees army met General George McClellans troops and took as many as 23,000 soldiers lifes. Lee had to retreat back to Confederate turf. After McClellan failed to follow up, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in the Confederacy land. The Proclamation was limited due to the slaves on the Border States. The reason for that was because Lincoln did not want to have them in the secession. This caused it to be unenforceable. After he passed the Proclamation it came with a bunch of criticism due to it doing with slavery and restoring the Union. The Peace Democrats came in and said criticism things toward what Lincoln did. Lincoln knew what he was doing when he placed the reunification. Lincoln already knew that with a reunified nation that it would not survive if slavery was still existing. Lincoln knew that slavery was the main issue of all major sectional conflicts since the very beginning. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation did not succeed to ban slavery on the border states he still was trying. While the Two armies were still fighting on land, the confederate and Union armies fought on high seas. Lincoln went passed congress and ordered a Naval Blockade that blocked all Southern ports. The reason for this was because the Southern economy relied heavily on cotton trade with Britain, and with hopes for Lincoln that the South would struggle financially. The Confederate had a very small navy but su nk more than sixty Union ships before it was finally defeated. This war took place on March 1862 at the Battle of the Ironclads. This war ended up in a draw. One of the deadliest war was the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee launched an invasion on the North in the summer of 1863. He was then defeated by Union General George G. Meade. This battled ended up lasting three-days near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This little battle ended up killing 52,000 men, they were either wounded, killed, or missing. This war was what they called the turning point. People called it this because the South started to lose. Lee once again was forced to retreat. The battle was a victory for the North and a loss for the South. With Lee losing to the North, Grant was invading Vicksburg, Mississippi in the West. With the Confederates trapped all they could do was surrender to Grant. This was another victory for the Union of Battle of Vicksburg. This battle gave the Union all control over the Mississippi River and this split the Confedera cy right in half. One important person during the civil war was Abraham Lincoln the 16th President of the United States at the time. Lincoln played a key role during the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment. He wanted to preserve the Nation and wanted slavery to end due to him thinking it was not right. Robert E. Lee, another important figure, was a General during the war who turned down Lincolns offer. Lincolns offer considered of him commanding Union forces over commanding the North Virginia for the Confederacy. Ulysses S. Grant was the top Union general after McClellan got fired. Grant started off in 1863 and had many victorys including Vicksburg. George McClellan was the first top general who was in charge of the Union. McClellan was fired from his job when he criticized Lincoln publicly and failed to engage Lees force. McClellan had a rather large ego and was very well know during the war. McClellan also was very timid and always avoided engaging Lees Army of Northern Virginia. After four long years of many battles the war finally came to an end. The war finally ended with Lee surrendering to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. With the Civil War finally to an end and with the Norths victor, Lincoln took up this opportunity to pass the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. These Amendments were passed between 1865 and 1870. These Amendments gave all slaves freedom and equal rights. African Americans were finally given to chance to live and not be afraid of doing wrong and being punished. They finally got to reunite with their loved ones and live a normal life. The Civil War was a very long and educated war. Showing that no matter how much states fight we are all equal in the end.

Sexism In The United States - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 1 Words: 357 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/06/24 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Sexism Essay Did you like this example? We have seen the inequalities between women and men especially in recent years. We have been separated by the pay gap, pink tax, and the general idea that women are perceived as less capable, or weaker even than men. This idea of sexism has to start somewhere though. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Sexism In The United States" essay for you Create order It starts at the very beginning of a childs life. Young people are raised in such a way where they are taught different behaviors and different mannerisms based on their gender. Many of these differences include boys being taught that theyre allowed to do something and girls arent because of their gender and the idea that boys arent supposed to like pink just because theyre boys and girls can just because theyre girls, etc. These learned behaviors and mannerisms have manifested themselves throughout the lives of these people throughout the years which has affected their experiences and or encounters with this issue and gave people the views they have on it today. In the workforce, women have been paid less than men, for example, in 2017, the median annual salary was $42,000 and for men, the median annual salary was roughly $52,000 which is about an 80% wage gap. The pink tax is also a problem because female consumers have had to pay more on certain services and products. Research has shown that women pay almost 42% more than men a lot of the time. This has caused rage everywhere because women arent paid as much as men and have to pay more for other items. Similar issues have occured in the past as well. In Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird, sexism is a re-occuring theme throughout the book. The main character, Jean Louise Finch, better known as Scout, wears overalls, jeans, and muddy shoes. She doesnt fit the societal norm for how women are expected to dress. Lee uses a bitter mood to emphasize the prejudices and struggles of that time from a young girls perspective. In conclusion, in order to grow together as a society, we must set aside our differences and recognize the strengths of others in order to change the world into a more accepting, efficient place for all.

Discrimination And Unequal Rights Within Society - 1198 Words

People living in any country fall upon a certain group in society. Depending on what race they are defines what group they fall under. Two groups that ranks race are the minority (subordinate) group and the majority (dominant) group. Subordinate groups are recognized by their lack of opportunities when it comes to education and wealth, as well as control such as voting, positions of authority, and other privileges that are easily obtainable by the dominant group. Five characteristics also distinguish minorities. Prejudice and unequal rights are experienced, seen presently and through history with segregation and slavery that have been acted upon minorities by the majority group. The most noticeable characteristics that minorities share is†¦show more content†¦Extermination coincides with genocide, the systematic extermination of an entire population. The most well-known consequence that minorities faced was the Holocaust, carried out by German Nazi Adolf Hitler, which took t he lives of 12 million Jews. Considered to be inferior and â€Å"alien† the Nazis enacted upon this severe action to rid the country of the Jewish race through ethnic cleansing ( ). This cleansing also mirrors expulsion, a less extreme level of intolerance than extermination, that is used to forcibly drive minorities out of an area by a dominate group. Before the final result of death camps, Jews were driven out of the country through a number of violence and threats. Expulsion, if taken too far, can also lead to genocide. Secession is another consequence that minorities face a host society. This happens when a minority group decides to break away from a former nation to establish a new one or join a pre-existing nation to become a dominant group. The Partition of India in 1974, for example, resulted in the independence in Pakistan which became dominated by Muslims and India, which were dominated by Hindus. Confronting Heternormativity With Carl Wittmann - 858 Words

Confronting Heternormativity with Carl Wittmann American rhetoric about LGBT+ issues underwent major changes in the late 60s and early 70s. While for years homophile groups such as the Mattachine Society dominated queer rhetoric, in 1969 Carl Wittman’s â€Å"Gay Manifesto† redefined the LGBT+ rights movement’s voice and goals (380). Using shocking language, his authority as a gay man, and emotional appeals to his queer audience, Wittman and his â€Å"Gay Manifesto† utilized a confrontational, liberationist tone to communicate his views on sexual identity and heteronormative culture. While opponents may argue that Wittman’s profane language and emotional appeals weaken his argument and alienate the audience, his rhetorical choices prove perfect for engaging queer readers. Wittman’s â€Å"Gay Manifesto† spoke to queer people and offered a new perspective in LGBT+ rhetoric. Profane and shocking word choice helps drive Wittman’s confrontational and liberationist stanc e on LGBT+ issues. As authors Madeline Davis and Elizabeth Kennedy support in â€Å"Oral History and the Study of Sexuality in the Lesbian Community,† American queer rights movements became more critical and liberationist in the 70s (426). Wittman’s piece provides clear evidence of this tone change. By describing topics such as â€Å"exclusive heterosexuality† and interactions between males and females as â€Å"fucked up,† Wittman unabashedly confronts heteronormative culture and endorses queer peoples’ liberation from

Wal Mart Organization As My Company Of Interest - 1901 Words

Abstract For this final research paper I chose Wal-Mart organization as my company of interest. The research conducted for this paper includes eight references supporting statements pertaining to the Wal-Marts compensation and benefits plans. In the paper I briefly discussed some financial and health benefits offered by Wal-Mart. During the discussion of the financial benefits we touched on the 401(k) plan, the Employee Stock Option Plan, and the Military Differential pay. I pointed out how Wal-Marts Military Differential Pay is above most companies as they pay employee’s full salary if they are called to active duty as most companies only pay the difference of what the employee is making with the military and would be making with the organization (Jathar, 2013). I also attempted to show how Wal-Marts health benefits compared to other companies by discussing their Health Insurance plan and their Health Reimbursement Account. I pointed out how Wal-Mart associates are paying on ave rage $7000 more annually than other employees with similar Health Reimbursement Account. I think the only way to fix this is for our government to take the same action as many of our sister countries and at a minimum mandate a cap that employer’s can have employee’s pay in to these accounts. In all I feel from the research and past personal experience that Wal-Mart is a great organization to work for even with the few needed improvements. Do different types of music affect the thinking and behavior of teenagers free essay sample

Nowadays, music is considered one of the top means to convey a message to someone whom you want to express your feelings to. Teenagers love to listen to music and relate almost every single thing that is happening in their life to it. I, myself, am very fond of music and love to listen to music according to the moods and situations. Music of a certain kind acts like a driving force and motivates people to push themselves a little harder. It is also said that if a person chooses a random music, his/her mood changes according to the energy that is being emitted through the song. This is what my written task is all about and also, showing the impact of music on our daily lives by taking the live examples of different music genres such as Rock, Pop, Ballet, Romance, Patriotic, Dub step, Country music and many more. In this text, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different types of music depending on different situations faced by the teenagers. And also about how â€Å"Music† can really help to overcome many problems faced in our daily lives. My main aim of blogging this topic down is so that all the young people around the globe can read it and also relate it with their routine. This shall help me to get some reviews and opinions of other students like me from other parts of the globe. For many teenagers like me, breathing is a necessity to survive, music like that is very important too. Older people and young generation have their own kind of music and they connect to it. And just like that music is something that people will always have in their daily life and will never give it up. â€Å"Do different types of music affect the thinking and behavior of teenagers? Which music styles do most of us, teenagers, prefer? What time of the day do we usually listen to music? And what makes us choose the type of music we want to listen?† No one really knows when the music was invented but it was a truly wonderful invention. It must have been probably invented thousands and thousands of years ago when humans may have landed on the planet. A lame guess of invention of music is that it must have been generated when â€Å"Early Man† was  trying to play with stones and accidently the stones must have clashed amongst each other, creating a â€Å"Click† sound. Today that â€Å"Click† sound has been modified into much more intense and complex combinations of different sounds forming different genres of music which we all love to hear. I myself am a national level tennis player and music is really playing a major role in my tennis career. Music is a driving force for me and motivates me to push harder than what I can actually do. A simple challenge which we all face in our daily routine is waking up early in the morning. Whether to dress up early, go to school or for tuitions or anything else, this will always remain a challenge for the teens. I am having a fixed schedule since last 8 years of waking up in the morning at 5 am. Music has helped me a lot in following this routine consistently. Every day in the morning after the alarm rings I take my IPod and earphones out and start listening to â€Å"Slow† songs followed by â€Å"Rock† songs so that my body slowly transforms into an energetic mood to play tennis. It may sound interesting but before my tennis matches I loved to listen to â€Å"Patriotic† songs. I am not the only one who loves to listen to music early in the morning. Many teens like you, love to listen to â€Å"Soft† songs and also some listen to â€Å"Heavy metals† in the morning to fight the near impossible challenge to wake up. In addition to that, what do you guys think, gives a flavour and energy to all the parties, DJs and club nights that we go to or organise at our own places? Without any doubt, Music is the answer. Can you even imagine partying without Music? Just imagine how many abuses and taunts you are gonna face from your friends. Music has created an all new world for us and it is because of it that we all are enjoying our lives. â€Å"House†, â€Å"Disco†, â€Å"Rock†, â€Å"Hip-Hop†, â€Å"Electro†, â€Å"Dub step† and â€Å"Jazz† are some of the famous music styles which are played in the Clubs and DJs. House music is a genre of Electronic dance music that was originated in 1980’s in the famous American city of Chicago. Disco is a style of music that became famous in late 1970’s and is played in the Discs and Clubs. Disco music is also called Funk. Hip hop, Rock, and Electro are music styles that consists of a stylized rhythmic music accompanied with rapping. Rapping is a rhyming and a rhythmic speech that is sung at a faster pace but in the same tempo of the song that is being played. Hip hop, Rock, and Electro has 4 key stylistic elements; DJing, rapping, break danc ing and graffiti writing. And Dub Step which was  originated in late 1990’s in London is almost same as rapping but it also includes Trance. These all music styles, as their name suggest, transmit an energy which motivates us to step on the dance floor and dance our heart out. These all forms, as we know, are so â€Å"Heavy† that they literally make you stand up if you are sitting, dance more energeticly if you are a bit lazy on the floor, and make you feel high when you are completely low. It is clearly visible how â€Å" Heavy Music† changes our mood and we react accordingly. As mentioned earlier Music truely conveys a message which directly affect our behaviour and mood. Music has become a need for most of the teens now. Coming to statistics, teenagers listen to an average of 2.5 hours of music a day and studies also prove that an average of 9 out of 10 teenagers have the access to MP3 players, compact music players or Ipods. I totally agree to this point as I myself have many friends who are literally â€Å"Music Lovers†. It is as if music has become a part of their body without which they cannot live. They want music every where, whether they are travelling, studying, sleeping, or even when they are taking bath. Considering the â €Å"Love Birds† I would like to know where were the Romantic songs invented? Leave alone where, but why were these invented and why do we listen to them? The answer is as simple as rolling off a log. Either people listen to it so that they can connect with the slow romantic songs, especially with their lyrics and let the feelings inside them flow out with the lyrics of the songs. Teens dedicate these songs to their love ones so that whoever the song is dedicated to understands the purpose and message that is being passed through the lyrics and beats of that song. The same thing implies when the soldiers listen to â€Å"Patriotic† songs before they step in the warzone. These Patriotic songs too emit a spark which pushes them to sacrifice everything they have, for their country. Music truly has the energy to transform a person’s soul into something he wishes to according to his mood by simply listening to a specific genre of music. Therefore we can see what makes us choose the different types of music that we prefer to listen every single day. It is of course the situation and environment we want to create around ourselves. We may also choose different genres of music to get out of a particular situation, like listening to rock music early in the morning to overcome the challenging sleep, or maybe listening to slow songs just before we end our day. Without any doubt, music that our  generation listens to does affect our daily lives in many different ways, the tone we converse in, the way we behave, and almost every single thing that we perform. Music has now become a necessity for all of us as we relate it with our daily lives. So if asked again whether music really does affect our thinking or is just a myth? Of course the teens like us will surely say that it does and does in the best possible way it can.

We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed Following the September 11 attacks, life was not the same for any American. Specifically, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the focus was on preventing workplace discrimination, harassment and backlash against innocent employees and applicants for employment who were, or were perceived to be, Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, South Asian or Sikh (Dominguez, 103). They also had to impose tighter employment screening processes to eliminate potential workplace threats. In addition, they need to design emergency preparation and evacuation plans and have backup data systems in the event of another terrorist attack. Age, color, accent, and disability discrimination are still rampant. Teens have also been harassed in the workplace (Dominguez, 104). With this in mind, more and more workers in this generation are refusing to identify with just one race or ethnicity. This is known as the Tiger Woods generation (Dominguez, 105). All businesses are struggling with ways to diversify their staff to meet the needs of the countrys constantly changing demographics (Garcia, 14). Regardless, employers are still required to report 100% of their workforce demographics in the EEO-1 form. The government collects the data from those forms. Sexual orientation is also an issue in the workplace. There are many people that are homophobic. On February 21, 2007, a Florida newspaper reported that Steven Stanton, Largo, Floridas city manager of 14 years, was planning to have a sex-change operation. Six days after that, he was fired by the city commissioners (Marques, 1). Stanton was planning to start an education program to address employee concerns about his upcoming operation; unfortunately, the employees had to read about it before their manager could tell them himself. If they had been more educated, perhaps his employees would have been more tolerant of his decision. Maybe Stanton would still be the city manager. People tend to be closed-minded to issues that they know little about. Since the September 11 attacks, more people have embraced their religious beliefs (Hand, 26). An employees faith can also bring issues at work. Religion in the workplace is a dimension of diversity, so over the last 10 years-as diversity initiatives have taken root in corporations-theyve looked at religion as a dimension of diversity (Hand, 26). Companies are now paying more attention to employees faith. For example, one belonging to the Jewish faith could take time off from work to observe a religious holiday like Rosh Hashanah. Muslims observe Ramandan for an entire month. During this time, they fast, pray, and evaluate their religious selves (Gueye, 1). Many Christian observe Good Friday by attending services and/or fasting. Some people even hold Bible studies during their breaks or lunch hour for interested persons. Two bills are pending in Congress that will provide protection against discrimination in the workplace because of sexual orientation and religious views (Ritter, 5). The Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2007 will grant protection against discrimination in the workplace for gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. The Workplace Religious Freedom Act of 2007 requires employers to make a reasonable accommodation for the sincerely held religious views of their employees, absent undue hardship (Ritter, 5). Most employers know that employees that work longer office hours and come from a two-income family have stress in their home lives (Hand, 26). If employers are flexible with their employees, conflicts can be avoided. Good communication is also important as well as compassion and tolerance. After all, diversity helps retain your people (Espinoza, 43). Companies can create ways for employees to understand each other; however, it in order for those methods to be successful, the companys CEO needs to set the example (Garcia, 14). Not only because its the right thing to do, but to create and maintain a well-balanced, healthy work force (Hand, 29). This is the reason that companies like PepsiCo have been successful in diversifying their work environment. Its part of their entire mission (Garcia, 16). In conclusion, the countrys demographics are constantly changing. People in general do not want to be grouped into one racial or ethnic group. Many want to openly express their sexual orientation. Still, others would like to express their various religious faiths. If both the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Workplace Religious Freedom Act become law, the legal duty of employers to accommodate employees with sincerely held faith-based beliefs against homosexuality will be heightened, though not by as much as the change in the undue hardship standard would suggest (Ritter, 7). As it has already been stated, good communication is equally important as compassion and tolerance. Companies need to start with an education program; it was Steven Stantons intention to educate his employees first. Diversity is about understanding others, and it all starts with the top person in the company. Companies want to hold themselves out as the employer of choice (Espinoza, 43). Everyone must work together to reach a common goal. References Dominguez, Cari M. (2007, October). Workplace Reality, Federal Expectations. HRMagazine, 52(10), 103-107. Argumentative Essay Sample - How to Create Strong, Convincing Arguments

Argumentative Essay Sample - How to Create Strong, Convincing ArgumentsArgumentative essay samples can help you get a good idea on how to organize and present your arguments in order to build up a strong and compelling thesis. You will find that there are several different types of essay samples, such as PowerPoint and diaries. In a diary form, you will be able to place the argument under a thesis or chapter heading. This can help you organize your notes and make it easier to read. The first step in composing an argument is determining a thesis. Your thesis is what guides the remainder of the argument and can either support or weaken your entire argument. Most times, people use their thesis to establish and justify the argument itself. There are many different ways that an argument can be created. The problem is determining which of these methods is best for the essay. There are three main forms of argument and they are: affirmative arguments, negative arguments, and counterarguments.A n affirmative argument is the creation of a hypothesis about a topic in order to support or refute a thesis. This form of argument is often used to argue for a position without resorting to insults and show-boating. It is easy to formulate and has a logical structure. In this form of argument, the creator of the hypothesis is the subject and the premises are the evidence for the position. For example, you may have been asked to 'argue against Hitler' but instead of referring to him as Hitler and stating your reasons why he should be removed from power, you may state your reasons why we must institute socialism.A negative argument is based on facts that do not support a conclusion. This is often called an out-of-context argument. To establish a negative argument, the argument needs to be based on evidence that does not support the argument. For example, a person may state 'I am tired of him stealing my car' based on proof that he has already stolen one car in the past. The statement 'I am tired of him stealing my car' is a negative argument.A counter argument is a rebuttal to a specific premise or argument. This form of argument is based on facts or viewpoints that may not support the argument. Counter arguments can be made based on a positive or negative premise, but the purpose is usually to show the fact that the argument is flawed. One important thing to remember when writing essay samples is that the arguments you create should connect to your thesis. This means that you should write an argument that addresses a point that you are trying to prove. Once you understand how your argument relates to your thesis, you can begin to write and organize your thesis. Also, remember that the argumentative essay sample is just a guideline.Your thesis can be different for each individual essay. It is okay to have different assumptions for each individual paper. The point is to create a strong and compelling thesis that can stand alone or work with the next paper. The nex t essay on this topic will cover the book 'Hitler did nothing wrong' by David Irving.

Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 11

Marketing - Essay Example 2003, 504). Marketing structures that play roles in the strategic planning process include formalization, specialization and centralization (Kellar, A. 2009, 389). These structures are, particularly, important in shaping the performance of an organization (Laforet, S. 2012, 163). Formalization is the degree to which working relationships and decisions are governed by standard policies, procedures and formal rules. Centralization is the locus of the authority and control of a decision within an organizational entity. In organizations that are highly centralized, only one or a few top managers hold most decision-making authorities. In decentralized firms, middle or lower level managers possess autonomy and participate in a wide range of decisions. Specialization is division of tasks and activities across positions within the system. High levels of centralization and formalization, together with low specialization levels, are likely to be associated with relatively efficient performance within marketing departments. In such departments, the top marketing managers use centralized decision-making authorities in setting a common direction for other departments while keeping overt conflicts minimal. The formal rules and procedures play a role in reutilizing activities and hold down risks and administrative costs. Therefore, higher formalization and centralization levels in the market department should positively relate to the ROI performance of low cost defender business units. Centralization, non-specialized and formalized organizations tend to be more efficient but less innovative and adaptive compared to those with the opposite structural characteristics. Despite business strategy being a general statement about how the unit chooses to compete in an industry, that unit encompasses a large number of different products, each facing a different competitive situation in different markets. There is the likelihood of existence of a considerable variation in marketing pro grams across products within similar business units (Freeman, B & Shaw L. 2009, 118). Since a business strategy fails to set a general direction of how the unit will compete, it should have an impact on the broad marketing policies cutting across products and product lines. The likelihood of a strategy being effective relies on the consistency of the marketing policies with the overall strategy, and how successful the unit is in adhering to the policies. One set of marketing policies broadly defines the nature of the products that the business offers to the market (Suder, G. 2007, 118). The policies cover a diversity of the product line, the general level of technical sophistication of the products and the target level of product quality in relation to the competitors. The prospector businesses heavily depend on the continuing development of new and unique products and the penetration of new markets as a primary competitive strategy. Hence, the adherence and policies of the prospect ive businesses which encourage the broad and technically advanced trade lines should relate

The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson Research Paper

The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson - Research Paper Example In this ride, she sees all the worldly things which were forbidden to her, and on the way, she dies. As the boat reaches Camelot, all the knights see the corpse in the boat and make the sign of cross. However, Lancelot says that she has a lovely face. In fact, this work of Lord Tennyson came under serious attack for dealing with fantasy instead of reality (Noyes 134). However, an analysis of the underlying themes of the poem reveals that it contains a more realistic picture of the society than many realistic poems do. The most important theme evident in the work is deprivation. The deprivation appears in the work as a curse that the lady cannot look out of her window. She does not know the reason of the curse and does not care to think how to remove it. The poem says, â€Å"And so she weaveth steadily/And little other care has she† (Lord Tennyson, lines 43-44). Admittedly, various scholars give various meanings to this deprivation. To illustrate, Hollander points out that womanhood in the century is the subject (112). This seems a rational explanation because females were deprived of the right to see and interact with everyone and everything they wanted. In addition, the women of that time spent very little time thinking why this social situation prevailed. The woman, however, becomes sad and says, â€Å"I am half sick of shadows† (Lord Tennyson, line 72), when she notices that she is deprived of direct contact with all the worldly pleasures. Yet another argument that is as strong as the first one is that the theme describes how art is deprived of realistic pictures of society (Saintsbury 28). The poem shows the lady viewing only â€Å"shadows† of the real society and portraying the same in her tapestry. Here, it is possible to argue that Lord Tennyson was lamenting of his poem’s inability to deal with reality instead of fantasy. The picture becomes clearer when the

Antonio Macéo :: Antonio Maceo Biography Bio

Antonio Macà ©o: The Bronze Titan The people of Cuba had many great heroes during the Cuban War of Independence. One of these heroes, Antonio Macà ©o, contributed strength and bravery as well as leadership and patriotism. Born June 14, 1845, Antonio de la Caridad Macà ©o y Grajales was raised by his French father and Dominican mother in Santiago, Cuba. His family migrated to Cuba from Venezuela, approximately twenty years before he was born. As a young boy, he was under the influence of his godfather, an educated attorney and active participant of the Masonic lodges, or the fomenters of dissent as they were known by the government. Although he lacked the conventional education attained by many other Cuban heroes, he attempted to educate himself under the guiding influence of his godfather. The Macà ©o family itself lived quite well in a house in town, as well as, the farmland they acquired. Throughout his adolescent years, Macà ©o worked as a product distributor for one of the family farms. Having to travel great distances, he learned to navigate the surrounding terrain which proved to be a great advantage in his later years as a freedom fighter. Outside of his tasks as a product distributor, Macà ©o roamed the fields with his adolescent companions, avoiding inane conversation to cover a slight stutter in speech. Growing up into a proper and upstanding man, he married his neighborhood sweetheart, Maria Cabrales. They had two children, both of whom died at an early age. Shortly after his marriage, Antonio Macà ©o joined the liberation army. He fought with his father and brothers in the Ten Years' War (1868-1878). His effective leadership enabled him to rise in command to the position of second leader. The army, however, endured several changes which would cause its eventual disintegration of power. Many members of this army felt they could accomplish more without the leader, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes. In 1878, at the end of the Ten Years' War, Antonio Macà ©o refused to cease the war with Spain due to the existence of slavery and the imperial power's continued subordination of the people of Cuba. He left for New York later that year only to return in 1895 for the War of Independence.

Wolfgang Keller at Konigsbrau

Individual Case Analysis Assignment II: â€Å"Wolfgang Keller at Konigsbrau-TAK† MGT 400- Monday 6-8:45 Chelsea Glovis a. What is your assessment of Brodsky’s performance? Please be specific. In my opinion, I believe that Brodsky is one of those individuals who is so intelligent his personality and social interactions suffer. Keller and Brodsky have very different approaches to problems, in addition to being different nationalities, this creates many of the problems that they face.Keller looks at problems and goes above and beyond to try and solve them, whereas Brodsky attacks problems with the textbook methodology (analytical) that is not always the best approach, and isn’t sure how to do anything else. For instance, half of their distributers were not attending the annual distributors’ meeting. Brodsky was already gone for the weekend and unreachable at home. Keller and his staff spent the majority of their weekend personally inviting the distributors, j umping through hoops to ensure they felt appreciated by meeting them at airports or railroad stations. After all of their hard work, the attendance was more than doubled, which was critical for the businesses success. Lastly, Brodsky was dealing with a distributor who he had written off as bad debt of 87,000 euro. Keller was encouraging him to meet with the customer and demand the money. Brodsky resisted at first, then finally called the customer and concluded that nothing could be done. Meanwhile Keller took matters into his own hands and drove to meet with the distributor in person and was able to get a check for the whole amount. It seems to me that Brodsky is making the least effort in regards to personal relations, while at the same time thoroughly completing the tasks he was assigned for sales and marketing purposes. Brodsky is failing to see the larger picture and taking into consideration how relationships directly affect business cohesiveness. I think that he may feel threate ned by Keller seeing his recent success and feels that since he is older he knows what is best for the company, although that is clearly not the case. Seeing that Brodsky is so analytical by nature, it provided reasoning behind the way he looked at the tasks at hand.I think that Brodsky could have made a much greater effort in resolving problems with distributors/customers, implementing his sales plan, developing a decent relationship with others, and acting as a manager not just an employee. It is crucial for employees below managers to feel comfortable discussing their thoughts and ideas, not scared and nervous. Brodsky does the least amount of work that meets minimum expectations on most areas of work and tasks that are assigned to him. For example, there was a very serious distributors lawsuit filed by one of the firm’s largest distributors that Brodsky was in charge of handling. In dealing with this issue, Brodsky sent a sales representative to work out the problem. Only after the sales representative failed did Brodsky make an effort to personally contact the distributor. Following their discussion, Brodsky determined that the distributors position was unchangeable. Keller knew this would be a huge deficit to the company if they lost this customer and arranged to have a seat next to them on the plane to work things out. After the plane ride the distributor agreed to drop the suit completely, if Brodsky had made more of an effort initially he could have been much more successful. While he does come up with new innovative methods for increasing sales and completing very thorough analysis, he doesn’t work within a realistic deadline. It is imperative to the success of the company to work in a timely manner so that sales can have a quick turnaround and begin to grow. Managers should be motivating to their employees to work hard and do their best, whereas Brodsky hardly communicates with his subordinates and coworkers thus diminishing any chance w hatsoever for good, working relationships to be formed. In order to grow as an individual Brodsky needs to use this constructive criticism and feedback to heart instead of arguing each critique, making excuses and blaming others. b. How effective has Keller been as a coach to Brodsky? Why? Could you have done better? Why and How? I feel the Keller has done almost everything he can think of to try and alleviate the current situation with Brodsky. I think that the two men have such differing approaches in solving problems; a lot of tension is created in the office as well as one on one.The majority of the time, Keller takes problems into his own hands and tries to solve them, I would like to have seen him ask Brodsky to go above and beyond. Such as, arranging seats next to a distributor to discuss the lawsuit, personally invite distributors to the convention, and make a home visit to demand payment from a client. While Keller did allow Brodsky to make an effort, I feel that he could ha ve been more successful if he provided Brodsky with ideas to solve these problems. Because Brodsky is so analytical, it is hard for him to think outside of the box.He is so used to strictly going by the rules and regulations he thinks once he has done those methods there is nothing else he can do. Keller needs to take into consideration Brodsky’s personality, problem solving skills, and relationships with others and in the end he will realize why Brodsky is the way he is. He continues to feel like he is never good enough because of the constant negative feedback that he is given. In my opinion critical feedback should be backed with the same amount of positive feedback as to ensure employees don’t feel inadequate and not valued. In some aspects, Keller and Brodsky share similar personality traits. It is a challenge for both of them to see others perspectives and personalities differences. They are both problem solvers; however attack their problems differently. In my op inion Keller has done all he can think of to help motivate Brodsky and for that I think he has been mostly effective. On the other hand, I wish he would understand their differences and realize why Brodsky does things the way he does. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I could do a better job; I would just approach the situation much differently.I have a way of providing critical feedback intermixed with positive feedback, as well as a course of action to fix the problem all in the same sentence. On top of the feedback, I would also include peer feedback as well as voice the concerns that other employees have expressed. I feel it is necessary to break down the feedback and explain why it is important and beneficial to fix these problems and how it will affect the business as a whole. I feel that this would be beneficial to Brodsky so he can take these specific steps to get better and learn from his shortcomings. Also, I would be more understanding of the way Brodsky operates as a whole and determine the best way to help him start to think outside the box to solve problems. I would also provide definite deadlines for tasks that he is assigned to in order to avoid missing deadlines, taking too long, and falling even more behind. I would give him words of advice and encouragement to make him feel appreciated and determined. Instead of immediately taking matters into my own hands as Keller did, I would allow Brodsky the opportunity to use my methods of completing tasks that were tough situations (i. . telling him to make a house call to discuss getting a payment check from a soon to be bankrupt company). Lastly, I would outline specific goals to accomplish for the next few months or until the next review to motivate him, as well as discuss company procedures that must be followed. These procedures would include mannerisms at work (open communication, proper etiquette, a minimum number of social outings that must be attended, etc. ) With clearly established rule s, goals and courses of action, there is little room for him to argue his side. c.What are the underlying causes of Brodsky’s performance problems? What actions should Keller take upon returning to Kiev? Be specific. The majority of Brodsky’s performance problems have to do with two different personalities, traits, management styles, ethnicity, and outlook. Keller is a very hands-on, action-oriented guy who takes matters into his own hands when they are not completed exactly as he would have done it. Although he is very personable and loves to share a lot of his personal life with co-workers he has a difficult time putting himself in others’ shoes.Brodsky on the other hand is a very analytical introvert who completes tasks by the tried and true textbook approaches. He has a hard time thinking outside of the box when it comes to personal interactions and relating with others, in addition he doesn’t like to spend a lot of time bonding with co-workers and ke eps the vast majority of his personal life to himself. These two completely different, night and day personalities are bound to clash and create bumps in the road that cause discrepancies. On top of all of that, I think that Keller is so concerned with making sure Brodsky understands where he needs improvement that he forgets to provide positive feedback with a plan of action that Brodsky can follow. In addition, their differences in age and methods to solving problems are completely contradicting as well, especially when Brodsky has shared little information about the way he operates. Brodsky has a hard time taking Keller’s feedback because he doesn’t understand what he did wrong and what he was supposed to do instead.Brodsky is very thorough and will take his time to ensure a task is completed to the best of his ability, while Keller is action oriented and wants to see fast results. Brodsky addresses co-workers in a formal demeanor with a distant management style and minimal personal life sharing, which damaged his overall management style. All in all, their overall management styles were to blame for clashing so drastically. I believe if Keller and Brodsky shared the same viewpoints on management styles and approaching tasks Brodsky’s performance report would have very high reviews.Keller should have clearly established due dates for tasks so as to avoid problems with Brodsky taking too long to complete them, explain what business etiquette the company promotes, provide well-defined expectations, goals, and methods to accomplish, and try to see the world from a different light. He must understand that not every individual functions on the same level, manages and accomplishes tasks in the same manner, and remember how different each person is in this world.Developing a friendlier relationship with Brodsky would make it easier for Keller to share how he feels and hopefully he will be able to provide feedback more than just during a perform ance review. d. What are the implications for Keller’s own development as a leader? Although Keller has had great success at such a young age thus far in his life, he still has a lot of room to grow as a leader. A great leader needs to be sympathetic with their employees and co-workers and do whatever they can to help them grow as individuals and flourish in the world of business. He must remember that each individual is different and not everyone manages with the same style. These differences are what creates diversity in teams and allows for innovative ideas and thorough discussions. Having faith in your employees is a huge part in being a successful manager. When at first they don’t succeed, provide insight, thoughts, ideas, solutions, etc. to continue to show them how to think outside the box. Keller is so concerned with fast results and finishing tasks on his own that he doesn’t give his employees the chance to learn from his methods. In his mind he is being the best leader he can be, meanwhile Brodsky is under the impression that he is being the best employee he can be. Both of them need to reevaluate their situations and how to work more cohesively together with such differing styles and traits. It is imperative that Keller works on giving positive as well as critical feedback, a defined set of goals and deadlines, an action plan to fix areas where his subordinates aren’t performing up to par, and provide constant feedback so his employees don’t go sixth months thinking they are doing an incredible job when in reality he thinks they are slacking.
